This logo is probably the last thing you thought you'd ever see in comics, right? Well, believe me, it was definitely a real comic and a real crossover. Just goes to show that you shouldn't make jokes in front of the right people.
That's how the whole story got started … as a joke between sales people and editors at Archie Comics and Marvel Comics. But somehow, it got to the ears of Victor Gorelick and Tom DeFalco, who managed to get Batton Lash to put together a credible story featuring Archie Andrews and Frank Castle.
The story is fairly simple (and a tad cliched). The Punisher was on the trail of "Red" Fever (who also went by the names Melvin Jay, Montana Bob, and Freckles). The criminal had fled to Riverdale, so The Punisher and his partner Micro Chip followed. In the meantime, Red (as Melvin Jay) had established his credentials to Mr. Lodge as the chairman of the board of Pulaski Pharmaceuticals. Both Mr. Lodge and Veronica noticed Red's uncanny resemblance to Archie Andrews.
As the Punisher and Micro Chip familiarized themselves with Riverdale, Archie Andrews was accosted in Pop's Malt Shop by two thugs named Binky and Buzzy, who take Archie and Jughead for "a ride." Luckily, The Punisher follows and manages to drive the thugs off the road, rescuing the boys. Red and Veronica went to the very retro sock hop at the high school (where the real Josie and the Pussycats were playing). A guy with the band recognized Red and called in a tip to some of his "competitors".
Archie and Jughead evaded the Punisher (who they didn't realize was trying to help them), and went to the police who, even though Archie had a history of shouting "wolf", did relent and send out a few officers to investigate. They attempted to nab the Punisher while he and Micro were listening in on some of the crooks' plans, but The Punisher easily rendered them harmless. Archie and Jughead went to the sock hop to try to get help from their friends.
As the party progressed, The Punisher showed up, telling Miss Grundy and Mr. Flutesnoot he was the new physical ed teacher. Red pulled a gun on Veronica, and a hired goon tried to gun down Archie, who was saved by the quick action of The Punisher. Micro came in and got the drop on Red, but Moose knocked him out, thinking he was protecting Archie. Red fled with Veronica.
At the police station, everyone was worried and abuzz with the night's activities, and Mr. Lodge wanted the Punisher found so he could hire him to find Veronica. Meanwhile, Archie and Jughead (along with The Punisher and Micro) staked out Pop's, listening to a ransom tape sent by Red. Archie deduced from what Veronica said that she was being held in a warehouse that was being used for preparations for the Fourth of July parade, which included a number of large, hot-air balloons (including Spider-Man, Hot Dog, Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Shield). Archie and the Punisher arrived soon after, and Red was captured (after taking a short ride on The Shield balloon).
The Punisher ixnayed Archie's idea of giving him a signal watch, but gratefully accepted the Riverdale High School sweater that Miss Grundy gave him to remember his evening in Riverdale.

The late, great, John Buscema provided the pencils for the Punisher art in this special. John was truly a legend in his own time…the man revitalized comic book artwork on the same scale as Neal Adams, but with considerably less fanfare. John's decades-long run on Conan the Barbarian marked him as one of the last true professionals in the comic business. I myself will always remember John for his great work on The Avengers and The Fantastic Four.
I think one of the marks of a good artist is not how he handles his everyday work or the big assignments, but in how he handles the little stuff…the niche work, the weird and strange assignments. By that criteria, and viewing this special team-up, Buscema was good.
But then you folks already knew that. Thanks for all the good memories, John!
